Great news that you have chosen Wessex Internet to deliver superfast & reliable Internet to your home or business.
This guide is created to explain what to expect during the installation of your new Internet service where the delivery method is Fixed-wireless.
Fixed-wireless is where we deliver the Internet service using wireless technology from a local transmitting base station to your home or business that is fitted with a transceiver dish fitted on the outside of your property. It's not Wi-Fi. It's a dedicated point-to-point wireless link between our core network and your property.
Be prepared for our engineers
You'll need a minimum of 2 x 13A mains sockets available for the equipment our engineers will bring to be powered up. So make sure you have a 4 gang mains power extension available if you're low on sockets.
- 1 x 13A mains sockets for the outside dish PoE adapter
- 1 x 13A mains socket for the Wi-Fi router
- 1 x 13A mains socket for Vonage (if you have ordered this)
The equipment uses very little power, but we'll need a normal UK socket for each.
You may also require more sockets if you have things like cordless phone base stations and other appliances connected near to the Internet router.
Safe and secure environment
Our engineers will be fitting a transceiver dish on the outside of your property. In most cases this can be achieved with a pair of ladders, however some buildings pose additional challenges and may require cherry picker access to ensure a safe installation.
Where a cherry picker may be needed:
- Most thatch roofed houses (as ladders can damage the thatch)
- Tall buildings; if our engineers need to access the dish mounting location and this is taller than 9m, they'll most likely require a cherry picker.
- Difficult installation locations, for instance, a mounting position above a glass conservatory which prevents ladder access.
Your sales representative at Wessex Internet should have informed you where the dish is likely to be installed based on where we have line of sight back to our base station; therefore you will have a better idea of how access may be able to be achieved than us, so please let us know if a cherry picker may be required.
Potentially, the installation position of the dish needs to change on the day of the install. This could be because the site our sales representative identified is too dangerous to reach, or impossible without scaffolding.
An additional £120 charge is applies to cherry picker installs.
Our engineers don't do IT support
Our installations are experts at installing superfast Internet to your home, but they are not able to help you with any internal IT, networking or Wi-Fi boosting problems we're afraid.
In most cases the Wessex Internet service will replace your existing Internet service, and so cables connecting to the old Internet router will be placed into the new Wessex Internet router without much additional work.
Wi-Fi is not like mobile signal in that it works pretty well through walls, ceilings and provides universal service across mosts buildings (if you have a signal to begin with!).
Wi-Fi uses much lower strength radio waves and is easily blocked with building materials such as stone, brick, metal, foil-backed insulation and other heavy materials.
The chances are, that as with your current router, you may not receive a Wi-Fi signal across the entire home, and you will find the Wi-Fi service faster and more reliable closer to the Wi-Fi router.
However with a faster Internet service coming in, this may be more noticeable after the new router is installed. Fundamentally, Wi-Fi coverage and speed may not change in parts of your home with our service, our Wi-Fi router will be limited by the same EU power restriction and physics as your previous router.
This is normal. This is physics!
If you are receiving a Wi-Fi router as part of your installation, our engineers will ask you where you would like this placed (bearing in mind we'll provide up to 30m of cabling from the dish to the router, drill through 1 external wall, and the install needs to be around 2 hours long).
If we locate the new router in the same place as your previous one, you will get broadly the same coverage throughout your home. Place it somewhere different, and you may find your gain in some places and lose out in others.
